Dentures
Dentures are removable replacements for missing teeth and surrounding tissues. They can be either partial dentures (replacing one or a few teeth) or full dentures (replacing an entire row of teeth).
Dentures can also be combined with dental implants for added support and stability, these are often called Implant Overdentures and more can be read about these here.
Who can benefit? People who have lost all or most of their teeth can benefit greatly from dentures and these are typically offered in two types; full acrylic dentures and those with a chrome cobalt framework.
How is it done? First, your prosthodontist will take measurements and impressions of your mouth. These are used to create a model for your dentures. After your dentures are made, they are adjusted to ensure a natural look and comfortable fit.
Patients can be as involved in the design of their dentures as much as they wish especially if they are requiring a very bespoke result.
How long does it take? Creating a custom set of dentures typically takes several weeks and several appointments. It is recommended to arrange an appointment early to ensure any upcoming special events can be accommodated for.
The Denture Journey
Dentures, often known as 'false teeth', are detachable prostheses outfitted with artificial teeth and flanges. They not only substitute missing teeth, lost or resorbed gum (soft tissues) and bone tissues, but also offer facial support to your lips and cheeks, as well as restore the lower facial height to an acceptable level of form, functionality, and aesthetics.
At Peninsula Dental Specialists, we offer an array of denture solutions including partial and complete dentures, overdenture procedures, implant-supported dentures, and other alternatives to dentures. Some terms to become familiar with when talking about dentures:
A partial denture denotes a prosthesis that replaces a single missing tooth or a few missing teeth in the dental arch.
A complete or full denture denotes a prosthesis that replaces an entire dental arch of missing teeth.
The effectiveness, retention, and stability of dentures rely on:
The quality of alveolar ridges and soft tissue (gum or soft tissues) coverage
The presence of healthy teeth serving as abutments
Saliva - both its quality and quantity
The individual's ability to adapt - which decreases with age, and as medical and dental health decline
If these clinical parameters are favorable, most patients successfully adapt to well-fabricated dentures for their everyday functions of eating, speaking, and aesthetic / cosmetic needs.
If these parameters are not favorable, achieving satisfactory results may be challenging, irrespective of the level of clinical and technical expertise. Specifically, lower jaw complete or full dentures tend to be less well-received than their upper counterparts, given the challenging coordination of cheek, tongue, and jaw movements required to retain and stabilize the denture during eating and speech.
For those patients who struggle with their dentures or seek a more retentive and stable alternative, our solutions such as full-arch fixed prosthesis or removable overdentures, supported or retained by implants, may be an option.
All procedures involving dentures or 'false teeth' have associated benefits, risks, and complications. Our Specialist clinician at Peninsula Dental Specialists will weigh these factors and provide professional advice to aid you in making an informed decision regarding the procedure's viability.
